The bathtub is often the focal point of any bathroom, standing out as the largest piece of furniture. If you're planning a renovation, understanding which bath size you need is crucial to ensure you get the perfect final result.

But where do you begin when looking for the ideal size bath to suit your bathroom without compromising space or functionality? In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about bath sizes, featuring useful tips from Brian Toward, our Chief Executive Officer (CEO) here at Wholesale Domestic.

What size is a standard bath?

The standard bath size has changed slightly over time. Previously, when the imperial measuring system was still widely used, most baths were 5'6" (1675mm) in length. These days, we use the metric system – with the new standard size being 1700mm long and 700mm wide.

However, this is far from being the only size bath on the market. There are a variety of dimensions available to suit bathrooms of all shapes and sizes.

What bath sizes are available?

While we typically think of most baths as being similar sizes, there is a surprisingly wide range of dimensions available. Whether you're working with a small space or looking for a larger bath to create a feature piece, there is sure to be something to suit your needs.

The most common bath lengths you'll find in the UK are:

The width and depth of a bath can vary depending on the model. Typically, a large bath is 1800mm long and around 800mm wide, while a smaller bath is usually 1400mm to 1500mm in length and 700mm in width.

How to measure your bath in four steps

With so many options to choose from, picking the right bath for your renovation can feel overwhelming. You may be worried about accidentally choosing a tub that's too big for your space or ending up with a cramped bathtub that is far from the relaxing haven you envisioned.

Thankfully, determining which size bath you need is much more straightforward than you may expect.

Before you start shopping, the first step is to measure the area where you plan to install your bath. To do this, you'll need to record both the wall and floor space dimensions. This will tell you how much flexibility you have to work with, not only in size but also in depth.

If you're replacing an existing bath, measuring its length, height, and width will help you gauge which size to buy or provide a comparison point to size up or down for your new model.

To do this, you'll need a standard tape measure and something to note the measurements down with.

  1. Measure the length of a bath
Brian explains: "To measure the length of your bathtub, place a tape measure at the furthest edge of the rim at one end of it and record the length of the entire stretch to the opposite end.”

“If you're measuring a corner or curved model, place the measuring tape at the widest part of the rim to ensure that you have enough space for the entire bathtub."

  2. Measure the width of a bath
"To measure the width of your bath, place the tape measure at the widest part of the tub, on the outside of the rim, and stretch it across the width in a straight line,” says Brian.
“If you’re working with a P, B, or L-shaped bath, you should record both the width at the widest and slimmest part. This ensures you fully grasp the total floor space you'll need for your new tub.”
  3. Measure the height of a bath
Measuring the height of your bathtub is simple. Place the tape measure on the floor and stretch it up to the top edge of the bath's rim. Record this measurement, and you'll be able to gauge the wall space required for your new model.
  4. Measure the depth of a bath
There is more to a bath's size than just its footprint. The amount of water a bath can hold is an important factor to consider when choosing a new model.
Brian explains: "To figure out the depth of your existing bathtub, measure the distance between the bottom of the deepest part of the tub and the overflow. This will tell you the depth of water that can be held."

Does the type of bath impact the size?

Alongside the overall size, the types of bath should also be considered when deciding on the best fit. Not all tubs are created equal in terms of footprint, with some models requiring far more floor space than others.

Single-ended bath

A single-ended bath is a timeless option, perfect for both traditional and contemporary bathrooms. It features one sloped end designed for reclining, with the bath taps positioned at the opposite end, making it ideal for shower-bath combinations.

This compact design is a popular choice for its ability to maximise space in smaller bathrooms or ensuites.

Standard sizes for this bath type typically range from 1500mm to 1700mm in length and 700mm to 850mm in width.

Double-ended bath

Double-ended baths are designed for maximum comfort, featuring two sloped ends that allow the user to recline at either side. This design is ideal for couples or little ones, as it offers ample space for two people to bathe comfortably at the same time.

The taps and waste are usually attached in the centre of the bath, meaning there's no risk of accidentally jabbing yourself in the back.

These baths are usually larger than regular, single-ended baths, with sizes ranging from 1700mm to 1900mm in length and 700mm to 800mm in width.

Brian suggests, “If you've got the space, a double-ended bath with a central waterfall tap and some ambient mood lighting can really turn your bathroom into a spa-like retreat. It's perfect for bigger bathrooms, giving you a stunning centrepiece that’s great for relaxing after a long day.”

Corner bath

Corner baths are an excellent choice for providing comfort and luxury in small and medium-sized bathrooms. Designed to fit snugly into a corner, these baths often feature a curved edge that provides a more generous bathing area without taking up additional floor space.

The typical dimensions for this bath type range from 1200mm to 1500mm in length, with the width varying between 750mm and 900mm – making them ideal for a range of different bathroom layouts.

Corner baths offer a unique stylistic choice for your space that can be further enhanced with bath accessories. These include integrated lighting or jacuzzi jets, providing luxury features usually reserved for bigger spaces and helping you create the ultimate self-care bathroom.

L-shaped bath

An L-shaped bath is a practical solution for those looking to combine a shower and bath in one versatile unit. The distinctive L-shape design provides extra space at one end, making it ideal for standing to shower. These baths are particularly suited for families who'll benefit from the convenience of choosing between a shower and a bath in one place.

These baths typically measure between 1500mm and 1700mm in length and are usually 850mm at the widest point.

P-shaped bath

A P-shaped bath combines style and practicality. Its rounded end provides additional space for showering while still retaining the comfort of a traditional bath.

P-shaped baths usually measure from 1500mm to 1700mm long, with the broader end extending to around 850mm.

Brian says: "Pair a P-shaped bath with a curved glass shower screen and a concealed shower valve system to create a clean and stylish bathing area. It's a great choice for medium-sized bathrooms where space needs to be used creatively, offering a mix of luxury and practicality."

B-shaped bath

B-shaped baths are an innovative design that combines the appeal of a traditional bath with the functionality of a modern shower space. With a shape that resembles the letter B, these baths feature a wider section at one end, offering plenty of room for showering comfortably.

Standard sizes range from 1600mm to 1700mm in length and 750mm at the widest point.

Freestanding bath

Freestanding baths are the perfect way to create a striking centrepiece in any bathroom. Unlike built-in baths, freestanding models can be placed practically anywhere in the room, offering the ultimate flexibility to suit any layout.

These baths are available in various shapes, including back-to-walldouble-endedsingle-endedslipper and roll-top models, allowing you to create your dream bathroom.

Typically viewed as a more traditional bath design, freestanding units are usually relatively large compared to standard bathtubs. On average, these tubs measure between 1500mm and 1800mm in length and 700mm and 850mm in width, making them ideal for larger bathrooms where space allows for a standalone feature.
